Life before the War
William was born in 1886 in Walton on Thames, Surrey.  His parents were William and Ellen, nee Thorne, who married on 25th December 1879 at St. Philip & St. James, Whitton, Middlesex.  His father was born 1854 in Middlesex and died 1912, and his mother born 1856 in Gosport, Hampshire and died 1906.

All born in Southampton.  Sydney and Christopher were twins.

By the 1891 census the family had moved to Southampton from Middlesex.

In the 1901 census the family was living at 7A York Square, St Mary’s, Southampton.  William senior was a Wine Cellar Man. Daughter Alice was employed as a General Servant Domestic, daughter Ethel a Laundress and son William junior was working as a Stable Boy.

William senior was a widower by the 1911 census.  He, along with his son Sydney and daughter Letitia, were living at 51 Chantry Road, Southampton.  William was a Drayman and Sydney a Messenger. Edwin, Stephen and Christopher were living with their married sister Alice Eva and her family.  Edwin was working as a Carman at the Sunlight Laundry, Stephen was a Seaman and Christopher was working as an Errand Boy and working for his brother in law.  They were living at 62 Park Road, Freemantle, Southampton.

William married Daisy Boulter in 1909 in Southampton.  They had a son William Arthur born 1910.  They were living at 20 Empress Road, Bevois Valley, Southampton.  William was employed as a Drayman.

Brother Sydney’s War Service
Sydney enlisted in Southampton and joined the Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery, 30th Brigade.  His rank was Gunner and service number 75515.
He was posted to France on the 19th August 1914 and on the 31st July 1916, age 19, Sydney died from his wounds.
He is Remembered with Honour at the Faubourg D’Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.
He was entitled to the 1914 Star and the British Service and Victory Medals.

War Service
William enlisted in Southampton into the Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort’s Own), 3rd Battalion.  His rank was Corporal and service number 9627.

He was killed in action on 12th January 1915 and Remembered with Honour on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

The sounding of the Last Post takes place at the memorial on the first Friday of every month at 7 p.m.

National Roll of the Great War
“West, W., Corporal, Rifle Brigade.
He volunteered in August 1914 and after a brief period of training was drafted to the Western Front where he served on various sectors.  After taking part in several important engagements he was killed in action in January 1915.  He was entitled to the 1914 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals.
