Life Before The War
William was born in 1896 in Southampton, his parents were Harry and Rosina.

Harry was born in 1856 in London and Rosina was born in 1861 in Lymington.  They married in 1881.  Harry was a Bricklayer and died in 1925 in Southampton.

William had 3 brothers and 5 sisters:

Ethel   b.1883

Harry   b.1886

Eva   b.1887

Lionel   b.1890 and died 1895

Rose   b. 1894

Frederick   b.1895

Annie   b.1898

In the census of 1901 William was living in Portswood with his parents and siblings.  In 1911 he was living at 115 Belgrave Road, Portswood, Southampton with his parents.

 

War Service
William joined the army on 15th June 1915.  He saw many engagements and sadly died of wounds at home on on 6th October 1918 aged 22.

He was awarded the Military Medal and The Victory Medal.

He is buried at Southampton Old Cemetery, plot 153.21.  The inscription on his CWCG headstone reads:

“In our hearts we remember you Uncle”
