William died during the Third Battle of Ypres, when the Commonwealth forces attacked the Germans around Passchendaele to divert their attention away from a weakly-held front further south.

After the capture of the Messines Ridge in July it became a dogged trench-based battle against a committed enemy, until the battle ended in November 1917 with the Allied capture of Passchendaele.

At this time, the Devonshire 1sts were transferred to Italy for a short time before returning to action around the Somme.
