William Henry Thomas Deem

William’s name was the last name to be added to Southampton Cenotaph and it was the only name to be added in 1922.

William was born in Torquay in the spring of 1884. He married Olive Alice Deem in Southampton in 1907  and in 1911 they were living at 51 High Street, Southampton. William was working as a hotel manager and they had a 1 year old daughter, Nellie Edna Deem.

William was one of 11 crew who was killed when the SS Antonio was sunk off Dartmouth after striking a mine laid by a German Submarine. He was 32 years of age and had been working as a Steward. The SS Antonio was a British cargo ship transporting a cargo of hay from Barry to Cherbourg. All of the crew were lost at sea.

William is commemorated on the Merchant Navy’s Tower Hill Memorial in London.
