William was the younger sibling of 2 born to William and Lydia Goodchild (nee Strugnell), who married in Shirley in 1897.
The family lived at 56 Cromwell Road, Shirley.
William, a policeman, was born in Wimborne in 1869 and he died in Southampton in 1956.
Lydia was born in Hamble in 1870 and she passed away in the Winchester area in 1929.

The 1st Battalion Hampshires was part of the 11th Brigade in the 4th Division.
Embarkation on to the Braemar Castle at Southampton took place on 21 August 1914, and the brigade disembarked at Le Havre a couple of days later.
William probably perished during the Battle of Broodseinde, part of the Battle of Passchendaele.
The battle took place on 4 October 1917, in heavy rain. It was seen as one of the most successful Allied attacks of the Battle of Passchendaele, but not for William.
