William was the younger of 2 siblings born to William Charles and Ellen Keeping (nee Fretter), who married in Wandsworth in 1878.
It must be assumed that Ellen died young, because William proceeded to have a further 3 children with his second wife.
William Charles Snr. was born in Southampton in 1857. After Ellen’s death, he married Catherine Pringle Buteux in Southwark on 27 June 1886.
William died in Croydon in 1898, with Catherine passing away in the same place in 1947.

William was originally enlisted in the Royal Navy (# CH/14454) before transferring to the RMB.
He enrolled into the RMB on 6 October 1904 at Eastney (near Portsmouth), which is the home of the Royal Marines Band.
There is no detail whatsoever about William’s death.
