Life before the War

Walter Reginald was the son of Walter and Bertha Elizabeth nee Babbidge. His father Walter was born in Millbrook, Southampton in 1869 and worked as a fireman he died in 1907.

His mother Bertha, was born at Cowes on the Isle of Wight, where she was baptised on 6th November 1872. Walter and Bertha were married in Southampton 1888. After the death of her husband, she went on to marry Isaac Dear in 1909. Bertha died in 1930.

Walter had 1 sister and 2 brothers:-

Gertrude Dora J born 9th December 1891, she  married in 1915 to Harry Ings. She died in 1978.
Horace Arthur born on 30th June 1901, married Julia A Medley 1929. He died in 1966.
Thomas James was born on 1904. He died in  1965

In the 1901 census Walter Reginald was registered as  living at 45, Bond Street, St. Mary’s Parish, Southampton  with his mother and sister.

His father was not at home at the time of the census.

By the 1911 census, his mother had remarried and had 4 further children. Walter Reginald with his 2 brothers were living with their mother, step father and step siblings at 93, York Street, Northam, Southampton. Walter Reginald was employed by the Iron Works as a Labourer.

Walter Reginald married Ellen Blanche nee McInerney in 1917. Ellen was born in 10th October 1895. She went on to marry William F Preston in 1921.
