Life before the War

Walter’s father was Charles who was born 1850 Portchester, Hampshire. His mother Fanny,  born 1853 in Southampton.

Walter had  5 sisters Annie Elizabeth b.1875, Fanny b 1877, Eliza b 1883, Ada b 1887 and Mabel Daisy b 1889, he also had  4 brothers Charles Henry b 1877, George James b 1880, Alfred Hampstead b.1892 and  Frederick Bertie  (Freddy ) b.1895

In the census of 1891 the family lived at 87, York Street, St. Mary’s Parish, Southampton. Charles was a Mariner.

In the census of 1911 he family were living at 48, Princes Street, Southampton. Charles is a Mariner with the Merchant Service and Walter worked as a Dock Labourer.
