Life before the War
Theodore John Dennis was born in 1892 in Southampton. His parents were Theodore and Fanny Jane Eliza, nee Collins, who married in Southampton in 1890. Theodore (father) was born in 1866 Southampton and died 2nd May 1942. Fanny was born in 1869 and died on 28th September 1948.
Theodore had 9 siblings, his 5 sisters and 4 brothers were:

In 1901 the family were living at the Post Office, Portswood Road, Southampton. Theodore was employed as a Post Master and was therefore classed as a Civil Servant.
By 1911 they had moved to 376 Portswood Road, Southampton. Theodore was a Postman for the G.P.O., Theodore John Dennis was employed by the L. & S. W. Railway as an Engine Cleaner in Eastleigh, John was working as a Telegraph Messenger for the G.P.O. in the Southampton Office and Fred was a News Boy.
On the 6th June 1915 Theodore married Ethel Dinah Mary Elkins at the Holy Trinity Church, Colden Common in the county of Hampshire. After Theodore’s death Ehel married Archibald Harry Witt on 11th June 1919.

We have not been able to ascertain any action that Theodore may have been involved with during the Great War. Because Theodore and his brother had sequential service numbers this would indicate that they enlisted at the same time to the same regiment.
Theodore died on 29th February 1916 at 158 Above Bar Street, Southampton age 23 years. His home address was 376 Portswood Road, Southampton. Cause of death was:
- Septic Endocarditis – 2 months
- Syncope – loss of consciousness
He is buried in Southampton (South Stoneham) Cemetery, grave reference C.2.231. As well as having his name on Southampton’s Cenotaph Theodore’s name is included on the Memorial in St Mary’s Church, South Stoneham.
