Life Before The War

Reginald Saunders was born in 1896 in Bartley Hampshire.His father Walter was a Brewers Clerk  and  was born in Collingbourne Wiltshire, his mother Emily was born in Adelaide South Australia.

The family lived at 182 Roseneath, Ash Tree Road. Portswood Southampton. He had 2 brothers George (1893) Fred (1894) and 1 sister Mercy (1899). George and Fred were both born in Bartley, his sister was born in Totton Hampshire.

When he was 15 (1911) he is recorded as being a milk boy along with his two brothers, the family were living at 1a Manor Farm Road. Portswood. Southampton.

Military Service

Reginald served as a Private in the Hampshire Regiment 1st/4th (Territorial Force) Battalion in Winchester August 1914, and left for India landing in Karachi on 11th November 1914.

They were attached to 4th Rawalpindi Division in January 1915 and in March 1915 they landed at Basra with 33rd Indian Brigade and remained in Mesopotamia and Persia for the duration of the war.

The battalion head quarters and one company were captured at Kut-el-Amara on 19th

April 1916, Reginald was killed in action on 21st January 1916 in Mesopotamia.

He was awarded the Victory Medal. British Medal, 14/15th Star.
