William was the oldest of 3 known siblings of Samuel and Elizabeth FANNY Goulding (nee Jenkins), who married in Southampton in 1883.

It must be presumed that a further child died in infancy.


At the 1911 Census, the family was living at 17 Woodside Road, Portswood.


Samuel was born in Southampton in 1859 and he died in the city in 1923.

Fanny was born in Corfe Mullen in 1858 and it is not known when she passed away, although she was alive at the 1911 Census.

The 1st Dorsetshire were in Belfast in August 1914, part of the 15th Brigade in the 5th Division. They landed at Le Havre on 16 August.


William perished during the Battle of La Bassee, fought between 10 October and 2 November.

This was during a period when the Germans were making great gains in northern France.


The Memorial commemorates over 13,400 British soldiers who were killed in the sector, from the beginning of October 1914 to the eve of the Battle of Loos in late September 1915 and have no known grave.
