Oscar was born in Southampton in 1894, his mother was Fanny Board – born 1867 in Weymouth and his father Frederick William Symonds born 1870. They married in 1893 in Weymouth Dorset, and had two children Grace Edith (1900) and Oscar (1895).
In 1901 the family were living at 14 Brintons Terrace St,Marys, the house was owned by William Parvin a widower and retired coach painter. Oscars mother was the housekeeper and his father was a coal agent. oscars mother died in 1907.
In 1911 Oscar and his father were registered on the census living at 48 Albert Road. Southampton with relatives. Oscar was working as a grocers assistant, his father as a compositor. Also living at this address were Oscars sister Grace, his cousin Polly Plunkett whose property it was, uncle William Stanley Plunkett who was 8 months old and second cousin Arthur Thomas Plunkett who was working as a fireman.
Oscars grandfather also named Frederick William Symonds, was born in 1845 and died in June 1922 in Weymouth aged 77 years.
Oscar enlisted in the 1st Battalion Hampshire Regiment on 31st August 1914 serving as a Private. He saw service in France and died of wounds he received while fighting in Flanders on 10th August 1916. He was 21 years old.
His father Frederick enlisted 1st September 1914 in the Royal Defence Corps/ Royal Fusiliers.
Osar is remembered at the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetary in West Vlaanderen. Belgium, the grave reference is VIII.D.18.
He was awarded the Military Medal, British Medal and the 15th Star.
