Life before the War
Leonard was born 1899 in Woolston, Southampton. His parents were Charles and Elizabeth Annie. Charles was born 1856 in Basingstoke, Hampshire; Elizabeth was born in Winchester in 1872.
Leonard had siblings Charles (who does not appear on the 1901 Census), Elizabeth Sarah b. 1897 and Gwendoline b. 1905. Both daughters were born in Sholing, Southampton. In 1901 Leonard, with his parents and sister Elizabeth, were living at “Penallee”, Loane Road, Sholing, Southampton. His father was living on his own means. The family employed a servant Mary Jane Kneller.
The 1911 census shows the family, parents Charles and Elizabeth and children Charles, a Boot Maker’s Apprentice, Elizabeth, Leonard and Gwendoline have moved to 87 Shirley Road, Shirley, Southampton. Charles senior is a retired brewer. His parents had been Wine and Spirit Merchants.
Leonard enlisted in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, 2/4th battalion. His rank was Private, his service number was 34316.
He was killed in action on 27th august 1918 just 19 years old. He is Remembered with Honour at the Merville Communal Cemetery Extension.
Leonard was entitled to the Victory and British War Medal.
