John was the youngest of 6 siblings born to Richard Henry and Louisa Cheetham (nee Walker), who married in Portsmouth in 1867.

Louisa was born in Southsea in 1843 but she died in 1881 in Southampton. Richard was born in Sheffield in 1835 and he died in Southampton in 1914.


John married Daisy Louisa Hendy in Southampton in 1902. Daisy was born in the city in 1879 but passed away very young, in 1911.

The 2nd Battalion was formed in Aldershot in August 1914, as part of the 6th Brigade in the 2nd Division.

They landed at Le Havre on 13 August, which means that John lasted a mere month.


He died on the last day of the Battle of the Aisne, which involved an Allied offensive against the German First Army around the Aisne river and surrounding plateaus.
