This is quite a complicated family story !! Herbert was the oldest of 3 siblings born to John Herbert and Alice Harriet Ginn (nee Caplin), who married in Winchester in 1888.

He also had 4 half-siblings, who were born to Alice and one Mark Rose White.

John was born in Essex in 1859 and it is not known when he died.

Alice was born in Winchester in 1868 and she passed away in Southampton in 1951.

At the 1911 Census, Alice is living in Lowford near Winchester with Mark White, her second child from her marriage and 4 other children.

The form actually states that Alice was “deserted” by her Army husband John, that she had subsequently lived with Mark and that he had fathered the last 4 children !!

Mark Rose White was an ex soldier, who had been born in Portsmouth in 1866. At the 1901 Census, he is based at Winchester Barracks, in the same unit as Alice’s brother !

Mark died in Winchester in 1923.
