Henry was the youngest of 5 siblings born to Samuel James and Mary Ann Hampton (nee Pace), who married in Southampton in 1881.
Henry also had 3 half-sisters as a result of his father’s later marriage.
Mary was born in Southampton in 1859 and she unfortunately passed away in 1890, possibly whilst giving birth to Henry.
Samuel was born in Fareham in 1861 and he married Lucy Jane Mead in Southampton in 1892.
Samuel died in Winchester in 1945.

Henry attested on 8 December 1911 in Southampton, so it is a puzzle how he came to enlist in the Royal Lancasters.
The battalion mobilised at Aldershot on 7 August 1914 and left for France on the 15th.
Henry perished during the German offensive at Arras. The Memorial commemorates the 35,000 Commonwealth servicemen who died in the Arras sector between the spring of 1916 and August 1918, and have no known grave.
