George Henry Brierley

George was born in St Mary’s Southampton and he was educated at King Edward VI Grammar School His father James Brierley was the Borough Analyst for Southampton. At the time of the 1911 census, 25 year old George was living with his brother Francis and his family at Montrose, 12 Highfield Lane, Southampton. He was working as a Ledger Forwarding Clerk.

In the summer of 1914, George married Harriet Minnie Chinnock and they were living at 13 Chapel Road, Southampton.

George was likely to have enlisted in 1916. He joined A Coy, 1st/5th Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment, which had landed in Basra in March 1915.  He was  attached to the 1st/4th Battalion when   killed in action on 24 February 1917.  He is remembered on the Basra Memorial in Iraq.

    George was a younger brother of my paternal grandfather Thomas Stevens Brierley (1878-1928).
