Life before the War
Ernest was born 1898 in Eastbourne, Sussex to parents Ernest and Florence Lizzie, nee Foster, who married in 1897.  Ernest senior was born 1874 in Sandgate, Kent and his wife was born 1877 in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.  Ernest had a sister Winifred Florence who was born 1903 in Eastbourne, Sussex.

In the 1901 census Ernest and his parents were living in Eastbourne, Sussex.  His father was a Manager in the Butchery Trade.

In 1911 Ernest’s parents and sister were visitors of the Winterton family who were living at 22 Rylstone Road, Eastbourne, Sussex.  His father was still a Butcher.  However there is no mention of Ernest junior with the family or at any other addresses.

By the time of Ernest Sydney’s death the family had moved to Southampton and were living at “Holmdene”, 43 Richville Road, Shirley, Southampton.

War Service
Ernest enlisted into the Grenadier Guards, 4th Battalion in Southampton.  He was a Guardsman, Service Number 29017.

He died from his wounds on 4th May 1918, aged 19, in France.

He is Remembered with Honour at the Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany.

He was entitled to the Victory Medal.
