Family Life Before The War.

Ernest Edward was born in 1880 to William and Hester in Southampton. In the 1891 census they were living at 66 Woodmill Lane. Midanbury.Southampton.
His father was employed as a groom. He had one brother Arthur also born in Southampton.

Ernest worked as a steward with the New York and West Indies Passenger and Steam Ship Company.

In 1900 he married Catherine Murtagh also born in Southampton. They had 2 sons William (1901) Benjamin (1909) and 1 daughter Minnie (1903).

The family lived at 26 Portswood Post Office. Portswood Road. Southampton.

Edwards father in law (Catherines’ father) was an Army Surgeon and her mother was named as Mina (Jemima).

Military Service.

Ernest joined the 9th Company (Chester) Royal Army Medical Corps and worked at the Queen Mary’s Military Hospital in Whalley. Lancashire.

On 12th July 1917 a dead body was found at Woodley bridge. Near Reading in Berkshire. It was identified as Ernest Edward, he had committed suicide by laying his head on the track of the Great Western Railway near Woodley Bridge. Reading and had been hit by a passing train.

He is remembered on the Screen Wall reference 72. 16342 of Reading cemetary.
