Life before the War
Ernest was born 26 October 1892 in Fawley, near Southampton, Hampshire. His parents were James and Esther, nee Mintram, both of whom were also born in Fawley as were all their children. Ernest had 10 siblings, 9 of whom were:

The 1911 census states that James and Esther had 11 children in total but 3 had died before the census was taken.
In the 1901 and 1911 census the family were living at Ashdown Cottage, Fawley, Hampshire. Ernest’s father James was a Farm Labourer, which was also Ernest’s occupation in 1911. His sister Jane was also living in the household with her husband Ernest James Parsons and their two children.
Ernest joined the Hampshire Regiment, 1st Battlion, Service Number 243172. He enlisted in Southampton.
Ernest died on 8th June 1918 aged 25 from wounds received in battle. He is Remembered with Honour at Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, France.

“Arnold. E. A., Private, 1st Hampshire Regiment. Joining in March 1917, he was sent to France in the same year and was in action at Arras and Peronne. He was killed in action on June 18th 1918 and was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals.
