Ephraim was the third of 4 siblings born to James and Catherine (Kate) Harris (nee Sallis), who married in Southampton in 1876.
Both parents were born in Southampton, Kate in 1854 and James in 1858.
Kate passed away at the age of only 35 years in 1889, in Southampton.
James is seen with a “servant” at the 1901 Census, with her 3 children also living in the house.
By the 1911 Census, James had married Martha Cadwallader…..the couple had 2 further children, one of which died young.
James died in Southampton in 1920.

Ephraim had originally enrolled in the Royal Navy in 1899, but was discharged at the end of 1904 as being of “bad character” !!
Ephraim died during the Third Battle of Ypres, having volunteered in 1915.
He had already been wounded in action, which may explain the birth of his son in 1917, and he fell in action at Cambrai.
