Life before the War
Edward was born in Southampton. His parents were Edward and Maria, nee Knight, who married on 2nd August 1890 in Southampton. His father was born 27th November 1863 and baptized 14th February 1864 in Southampton, whilst his mother was born in Hursley, Hampshire in 1866. He had siblings James Edward W born 1891 and Reginald Arthur born 1903.
In 1901 the family were living at 12 Ascupart Street, St. Mary’s, Southampton. Edward senior was working as a Wheelwright. His wife’s parents, John and Jane Knight, were living with the family.
The family is still living at 12 Ascupart Street in 1911 with Edward senior still employed as a Wheelwright which was also his son James’ occupation. Edward’s in laws are still living with them. Edward and Maria had 5 children in total but 2 had died by 1911.
Edward enlisted in Southampton, and joined the Hampshire Regiment, 2nd/5th Battalion as a Private, his service number was 241284.
He was killed in action on 20th November 1917 aged 19 in Egypt. He is Remembered with Honour at the Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel and Palestine (including Gaza).
