Edward was the youngest of 9 siblings born to John Henry and Harriet Collyer (nee Skinner), who married in Lambeth on 23 October 1853.
John was born in Battersea in 1825 and Harriet in Lambeth in 1831.

Ottokar was built in 1884 and was requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1915.
She sailed from Newcastle, with a cargo of coal, bound for London. It is thought that she was sunk by a torpedo fired from UB-38, under Waldemar von Fischer, off Whitby.
All crew were presumed drowned.
