Life Before The War
Cyril was born in 1889, his parents were Alfred and Frances, nee Tanner (maiden name may not be correct). Alfred was born in 1856 on The Isle of Wight, he died in 1939 in Romsey. Frances was born in 1856 in Southampton, she died in 1907 also in Southampton. They married in 1884 in Hackney, London.
Cyril had 1 sister and 1 brother:
Gladys Olive born 1891 and died in 1977.
Alwyne Lionel born 1893 ald also died in 1977.
In the 1891 census Cyril was living at 9 Above Street, Southampton with his parents Alfred and Frances. Alfred was working as a Greengrocer and Fruiterer. Also registered at the address was Andrew Travers, Frances’s stepfather who was given as the head of the household. He too was a Greengrocer and Fruiterer.
The 1901 census shows that Cyril was now living at 16 The Avenue, Southampton with his parents and two siblings. His father was a Grocer.
By the 1911 census Cyril was at sea, his father and brother were living at 124 Above Bar, Southampton.
Brother Alwyne enlisted in the army in 1916 and joined the Wiltshire Regiment. He fortunately survived the war.
In 1918 Cyril’s father was living at 53 Canterbury Avenue, Southampton.
Cyril died of disease on 9th November 1918 in the Crescent War Hospital, Croydon, Surrey.
Probate of £326 was to his sister Gladys Olive Vaughan.
He is buried in Southampton Old Cemetery, Hill Lane, Southampton.
