Life before the War
Charlie was born 1899 in Southampton. His parents were Charles and Emily Kate, nee Gritt, who married in 1888 in the New Forest District, Hampshire.

In 1901 the family were at 20 Zions Hill, Southampton. Charles was working as a Stonemason’s Labourer.
They had moved to 20 Lansdown Hill, Southampton by 1911. Charles was still working as a Stonemason’s Labourer whilst Thomas was a Corn Merchant’s Carter and Florence was working as a Domestic Servant.
