Life before the War
Charles was the youngest child of Joseph William Chappel (1857-1941) and Amelia, nee Jacks (1851-1930).  Joseph was born in Jersey and Amelia in Kings Norton, Staffordshire. They married in 1879 in Southampton.  Joseph and Amelia had 6 children including Charles:

William Thomas Chappel – born 1880 in Southampton.

Harriet Amelia Chappel – born 1882 in Southampton and died on 4th November 1963.
Harriet married Stephen John Gibbs in 1909.

Ethel Chappel – born 1884 in Southampton and died 11th November 1944.

Percy Joseph Chappel – born in 1887 and died on 7th July 1967.

Susan Chappel – born in 1889 and died in 1971.

In the 1891 census Charles, recently born, was living with his mother and siblings at 1 Coalporters Arms, Northam Road, Southampton.  It is not known where his father was at this time.

The 1901 shows that Charles was living with his family at School House, Peel Street, Southampton.  His father is working as a School Caretaker.

By the 1911 census Charles is living with his parents and 3 of his siblings at 39 Peel Street, Southampton.  His father is still working as a School Caretaker and the occupation of Charles is a Grocer, but he is unemployed.


“Harriet Amelia Gibbs of 129 Greenhill road Winchester (wife of Stephen John Gibbs) died 4/11/1963. Administration Winchester 17 December to the said Stephen John Gibbs retired electrician. Effects £875 11s 7d”

“Ethel Chappel of 65 Highfield Crescent Southampton spinster died 11/11/1944. Administration Winchester 4th September to Percy Joseph Chappel bakery manager Effects £292 2s 8d”


War Service
Charles Edward Chappel was reported as presumed dead on 23rd October 1916 and his effects left to his father.  He is remembered at Thiepval Memorial on pier and face 7 c and 7b.  At the time of his death Charles’ parents lived at “Malborough” 65 Highfield Crescent, Southampton.
