Bertie was the fourth of 7 siblings born to Thomas and Elvina Ebling (nee Lewsley), who married in Spalding in 1884.
Elvina was born in Lincolnshire in 1857 and she passed away in Birkenhead in 1934.
Thomas was a Railway Loco driver and was also born in Lincolnshire, in 1861. He died on 12 March 1941, in King’s Lynn.
Thomas left £956 2s 9d to two of his children, Walter and Kate.

Bertie married Alice Morgan in Walsingham in 1916, and it must be assumed that they moved to Southampton soon after.
Records show that hey lived at 14 Malmesbury Road, Shirley although Alice was living in Copnor at the time of Bertie’s death.
Alice was born in Norfolk in 1892; she married John Neale in Southampton after Bertie’s passing, in 1920, and she passed away in the city in 1966.
Ghurka was a Tribal-class destroyer, launched from Newcastle on 29 April 1907.
She was part of the Dover Patrol and played a part in the sinking of U-8 on 4 March 1915 in the Channel.
On 8 February 1917, Ghurka hit a mine off Dungeness; only 5 crew survived, with 74 perishing.
