Life before the War

Arthur was born on 15th April 1897 and baptised at All Souls, Harlesden, London on 11th June 1897. His father was Reginald Warren who was born in 1861 in Exeter, Devon and died 1933 in Southampton. Arthur’s mother Gertrude May, nee Soady, was born 1855 in Liskeard, Cornwall.  Reginald and Gertrude married on 21st September 1889 at St. John’s Church in the Parish of St. Luke, Chelsea, London. Gertrude was a widow when she married, her married name was Williams.

Arthur’s 4 siblings were:

Violet May Williams b. Jan 1885 (his half sister).
Reginald France b.1890 d.1893.
Lubin James b.12th September 1891, baptised 25th January 1895 and d.Mar 1977.
Cyril George b. 4th October 1894, baptised 25th January 1895.

The family were living at 151 Harley Road, Harlesden in both the 1901 and 1911 census. Violet had taken the surname of Northam in 1901 but reverted to Williams by 1911. Reginald was employed as a Portmanteau Maker in in 1901 and a Leather Worker, Fitted Cases in 1911. In 1911 most of the children were employed, Lubin was working as a Dental Instrument Maker, Cyril was a Merchant’s Clerk and Violet a School Teacher. Arthur was still attending school.

Reginald and Gertrude seemed to have moved to Southampton when they were notified of their son’s death and living at 29 Coventry Rd, Polygon, Southampton, but moved back to their previous address when Arthur’s medals were forwarded to them.

Arthur is remembered with Honour on the Arras Memorial, France.

“Northam, Lce. Cpl. Arthur Reginald, 251102. 2nd/7th Bn. London Regt. 23rd May, 1917.  Age 20.  Son of Reginald Warren Northam and Gertrude May Northam, of 29 Coventry Rd., Polygon, Southampton”.

Arthur was entitled to the British Service and Victory Medals. On the Medals Rolls Card his father Reginald Warren was next of kin and living at 151 Harley Road, Harlesden, N.W.
