Arthur was the second of 3 siblings born to Frank and Ellen Priscilla Gannaway (nee Shelley), who married in Shirley in 1894.

Both parents were born in Shirley, Ellen in 1864 and Frank in 1870.

 

The family moved from Shirley to “Wisteria” in Pointout Road, Bassett at some point between 1894 and the 1901 Census.

 

Ellen passed away in Southampton in 1943, Frank in 1949.

Frank William b. 26 December 1895 Bassett   d. 1980 Southampton   Married Agnes Ethel Horn in Winchester in 1929.

Arthur 

Herbert George   b. 20 December 1902 Bassett   d. 1975 Southampton   Married Eva M. Broomfield in New Forest in 1925.

 

 

The 2nd Hampshires took part in the 1915 Gallipoli campaign before departing from Alexandria in March 1916, bound for Marseilles and action on the Western Front.

 

The battalion was part of Allenby’s Third Army, in the 29th Division, at Arras between 9 April and 16 May 1917.

The 29th Division took part in the phase of the Arras offensive known as the Second Battle of the Scarpe, between 23 – 24th April 1917.

 

It must have been during this action that Arthur perished.
