Life before the War
Albert was the fourth of 7 siblings (an 8th sibling died young) born to George and Sarah May in Southampton. There is evidence to suggest that he was known as Frank.
George was born in Plaitford in 1853 and Sarah in Romsey in 1860. They married in Winchester in 1880.
At both the 1901 and 1911 censuses the family were living at 32 Kentish Road, Shirley, Southampton.
George died in 1910 and Sarah in 1921, both in Southampton.
Albert’s 6 siblings were:
George H b.1881 in Otterbourne and d.1928 Southampton. A Private in the 25th Middlesex Regt. (Serial No. 208191) or possibly the 5th Hampshires who volunteered 3 March 1915. He went to India the same year where he was engaged in garrison duties. He was brought back to England in August 1919 and was discharged from the Army on 15 September because of sickness.
Henry May (Harry) b.1883 and d.1977 Southampton.
Arthur Edward b.1888 and d.1922 in Christchurch, Dorset.
Rosa Nellie b.1885 and d.1965 Surrey. Married William Whitton in Southampton 1911.
Frederick James b.1893 and d.1957 Lambeth. Married Mary D. Jupe in Southampton 1919.
Percy Wilfred b.1897 and d.1967 Southampton. Married Lily D Elloway in Southampton 1929. He joined the Merchant Service as a Fireman in January 1915 serving on the SS Kenilworth Castle, the Araguaya and the Diana. He had several narrow escapes from being torpedoed and was still in the Merchant Service in 1920.
Albert enlisted in Winchester in May 1916. In the September of that year he was drafted to Mesopotamia (Iraq) where he took part in the fighting for Baghdad. He was taken prisoner on the Tigris in March 1917 and died in November, probably of sickness.
He is commemorated on the Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery.
