Albert, a Porter at the Halkett Hotel in St. Helier in 1901, married Violet Lilian Tostevin on Jersey; it is not known when the wedding took place.

Violet, a dressmaker, was born on Jersey in 1895. The couple moved to the mainland presumably after their wedding, and lived at 68 Cranbury Avenue.

The 21st (Islington) battalion was raised on 18 May 1915, by the Mayor and the borough.

It arrived in France in early June 1916, as part of the 121st Brigade in the 40th Division.

They went to the front line near Loos and were later in action at the Battle of the Ancre on the Somme.

It was on the Somme that Albert perished, no more than 6 weeks after he had arrived in France.
