Battalion: 1st
Rank / Service No: Private, 18773

Frederick was the younger of 2 known siblings born to George and Elizabeth Jane Gradidge (nee Baker), who married in Southampton in 1892.

It must be assumed that a further child died in infancy.

The family had lived at 107 Radcliffe Road, Northam but were “lodging” with the Plowman family at 84 St. Andrew’s Road (near present day Solent University) at the 1911 Census.

George was born in Eling in 1868 and he died in Ilford in 1952.

Elizabeth was born in Lymington in 1868 and she passed away in Southampton in 1927.

Frederick’s sister was….

Daisy   b. 1896 Totton   d. ??   Married Leonard A. Parkes in Southampton in 1933.

The 1st Battalion Royal Irish were in Nasiribad, India at the outbreak of war. They landed at Devonport on 18 November 1914 and came under the orders of the 82nd Brigade in the 27th Division.

The Division landed at Le Havre on 20 December 1914 and were based around Zillebeke near Ypres in mid 1915.

Burials from Valley Cottages Cemetery were amongst a group of cottages on “Observatory Road”, which ran eastward from Zillebeke.

It contained the graves of 111 UK and Canadian soldiers and was in an exposed position for most of the war. After the Armistice, the graves were moved to the Railway Dugouts cemetery.

The “Railway Dugouts” cemetery is 2km west of Zillebeke, where the railway runs on an embankment overlooking a small farmstead, which was known to troops in the war as “Transport Farm.”

Burials began here in April 1915 and continued until the Armistice, especially in 1916 and 1917 when Advanced Dressing Stations were based in the dugouts and the farm.

14 Royal Irish Fusiliers were buried in Valley Cottages between 24-27 August 1916.
